Welfare
The Welfare Department offers services to people unable to meet the most basic of human needs for themselves and their families. Through the Welfare Desk, a client’s situation is assessed and support can be offered through limited direct assistance or referrals.
Outline
The Scalabrini Welfare team offers assistance to any migrants and refugees. Through a process of consultation, the team is able to assist the individual by ensuring that they gain access to basic social services such as medical care, schooling, shelter and assistance with advice/application for voluntary repatriation. Issues such as access to SASSA grants or documentation are followed up.
The desk also manages a limited direct assistance programme which offers specific support to emergency and special cases in the form of free clothing and/or access to other material assistance.
Scalabrini Centre believes that a sense of well-being is essential to achieving a sustainable livelihood. Welfare clients must demonstrate a willingness to work alongside the Welfare team, supporting the change in their own life circumstances.
The Welfare Desk consults with clients Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 13:00, and in the afternoon per appointment.
Objectives
  • To assist individuals in meeting their basic needs through referrals and through limited direct assistance for emergency and special cases.
  • To facilitate access to, and provide information about, services in sectors including education, health, law and order, labour and in the Departments for Home Affairs and Social Development.
  • To promote proactive engagement by clients in improving their own circumstances.
  • To deliver services in line with the Scalabrini values.
Projects
AMKA
The AMKA Workshop is a collaborative effort between the Employment Access Programme and the Welfare Programme, designed to raise self-esteem amongst vulnerable refugee women and empower them to be productive, self-sustaining and respected members of their communities.
AMKA, a Swahili word meaning ‘to wake up’, is a workshop that consists of the following modules: life skills, stress management, HIV/AIDS awareness, basic computer skills, job readiness skills, as well as Art Therapy. These ladies also receive one on one career guidance following the workshop via the Employment Access Programme, so as to ensure that the ladies receive the support needed to successfully secure employment following their training.
